Squirrels can be fun to watch outdoors, running and gathering food, but when they make their way into our homes, they are a nuisance. They can cause major damage and become a safety hazard by chewing through building materials such as insulation or electrical wiring.
Squirrels can be a health hazard, as they may carry parasites or diseases.
Squirrels can squeeze through small holes, or chew through siding into our homes. They are agile climbers, so attics can be very attractive to them as they are warm, dry and mostly uninhabited. Once they find a comfortable spot they may chew even larger holes to create an entryway.
Signs of a Squirrel Problem
Squirrels can be very difficult to get rid of once they have established a nest. They are often heard before they are seen, and active in the morning and evenings. Here are some signs that you have a squirrel problem:
- Noise! You may hear scampering or scratching, squirrels are very active!
- Chewed holes or wire
- Droppings and/or odor from droppings
- Debris from nesting
Squirrels that invade our space are a nuisance all year, but some months see more activity than others. They mate twice a year, in February/March and July/August, so these months are especially active. As the weather gets colder, they will search for food and warmth and build their nests close to food sources.
